Glastonbury
is the modern name for the Ancient Isle of Avalon in the
county of Somerset (Land of the Summer People). It is here that
Arthurian legends and myths abound and it is claimed that King
Arthur's bones, together with Guinevere's, were buried in the Abbey,
the site of the first English Christian church. The truth is
as elusive as the Mists of Avalon that veil the Levels and Moors.
The Tor, meaning hill, topped by the ruin of St Michael's Church,
is on the Michael/Mary leyline and is a wonderful place to view
the surrounding panoramic countryside.
Glastonbury is also home
to Chalice
Well, the famous red spring where legend says the Holy Grail
just might be hidden; The well is one of the oldest continuously
used holy wells in Britain, certainly in constant use for the last
2,000 years. Chalice Well is also surrounded by beautiful gardens.
Also legendary is Wearyall
Hill, where Joseph of Arimathea is said to have placed his staff
in the ground when he arrived here from the Holy Land. (This was
in truth once an island; traces of Roman docks have been
found on the side of Wearyall Hill). The staff sprouted and became
the Holy Thorn, the descendants of which still blossom today at the
Winter Solstice, by tradition a sprig is cut and sent to the Queen
each year for her Christmas dining table.
Glastonbury is a small
market town with almshouses dating back to the 12th century. The
magic of Glastonbury is in the feel of
the place, an individual experience that defies explanation
and draws people back time and time again.
